Auf dem Schloßplatz in Berlins historischer Mitte entsteht der größte Ziegel-Neubau der Nachkriegszeit in Deutschland. 3,5 Millionen rote Ziegelsteine werden dafür sorgen, dass aus dem Betonrohbau, der ab März 2013 aus der riesigen Baugrube emporgewachsen ist, nach und nach ein rotes Schloss wird. Doch anders als das Rote Rathaus, das nur ein paar Hundert Meter entfernt steht, wird das Berliner Schloss nur vorübergehend "erröten". Denn schon bald wird der rote Ziegel, wo er nicht von Schmuckelementen aus Sandstein verdeckt wird, mit einer beigen Putzschicht versehen.
